Gynecologic Oncology Center

Dear Patient,

welcome to the gynecologic oncology center of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Technical University Munich. Thank you for your interest!

Our certified center offers a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancer including ovarian, uterine, cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancers. Click here for further information on these cancers.
You will be treated by gynecologists with subspecialty training in gynecologic oncology. We strongly collaborate with multiple other specialties including surgery, urology, radiation oncology, internal medicine, psychosomatic medicine and psychiatry, pathology, nuclear medicine, radiology as well as genetics.
Our goal is to offer you highest-level individualized care.

Diagnosis

When you come for your appointment at the gynecologic oncology center, there will be a detailed history with your physician as well as a thorough physical exam (pelvic, abdominal and breast) if necessary. Depending on your complaint there will be cytology smears, biopsies or a microscopic examination of the cervix, vagina and/ or vulva with a special staining technique (colposcopy). The hospital also offers ultrasound, X-ray, CT, MRI as well as PET scans.

Tumorboard

If you suffer from a malignancy, the treatment concept will be developed in a multidisciplinary conference (tumor board) consisting of gynecologists, medical oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists and pathologists along with any other involved specialty. Your physician will take time to discuss the recommendations with you personally after the tumor board.

Treatment

Surgery:

The gynecologic oncology team at the Klinikum rechts der Isar offers highest level evidence-based treatment of gynecologic malignancies. The underlying concept is operating as much as necessary but as little as possible. We offer a large range of surgical techniques including laparotomies as well as minimal invasive procedures (laparoscopy, DaVinci). If medically indicated, we also offer sentinel lymph node mapping in order to avoid the categorical removal of all lymph nodes.
If necessary, we perform surgeries in collaboration with other surgical departments (urology, general surgery). You may need to spend some time in the intensive care unit after larger operations. The hospital offers several intensive care units where a team of anesthesiologists, surgeons, internists as well as gynecologists will take care of you. Our gynecologic floors are equipped with monitors and the nursing team is trained to care for patients after complex surgeries.

Chemotherapy:

We offer individualized chemotherapy regimens as well as antibody treatments at the department of obstetrics and gynecology of the Technical University Munich.  You will be cared for by gynecologists in order to guarantee continuity of care. This allows us to ensure that your therapy is tailored towards your needs. We also participate in clinical trials in order to offer you cutting edge treatment.

Clinical trials

You can find a list of open clinical trials here. The department’s clinical trials unit consisting of study nurses and physicians is specialized in conducting and monitoring clinical trials and will follow you during your entire treatment course. The unit cooperates with the Münchner Studienzentrum. It is always your decision to participate in a clinical trial.

Tumor genetics

The tumor genetics clinic offers women of families with frequent breast or ovarian cancer individualized genetic counseling and testing. Click here for further information and contact details.

Integrative medicine

The ZIGG (center for integrative gynecology and obstetrics) at the department of obstetrics and gynecology, Technical University Munich offers you complementary medicine treatments. Conventional and complementary treatment concepts are offered within the same center and can be offered side by side. Click here for further information and contact details.

Additional treatment options

Manual lymph therapy:

A specialized physical therapist provides outpatient lymph therapy for our patients. Click here for further information and contact details.

Nutrition counseling and exercise for women with cancer:

Many women diagnosed with a malignancy suffer from fatigue and weight loss. Regular exercise as well as a healthy diet can reduce the subjective and objective side effects of the disease and treatment and can in turn have a positive impact on the course of the disease and on quality of life. The hospital offers all cancer patients a nutrition and exercise center, providing guidance to improve your diet and exercise. Along with this we offer a cooking course with the chef Alfons Schuhbeck for modular nutrition. It will assist you in developing a healthy and tasty diet under difficult circumstances e.g. chemotherapy or after abdominal surgery. Click here for further information and contact details.

Palliative medicine:

An attending physician with training in palliative medicine is part of the team of the department of obstetrics and gynecology.  In addition, we strongly cooperate with the palliative care service of the hospital. Palliative care is appropriate when all medical curative options of a disease have been exhausted. Click here for further information and contact details.

Psychooncology:

Dipl. psychologist Ulrike Ackermann is exclusively available for patients of the department of obstetrics and gynecology in an outpatient as well as an inpatient setting.
